Compensation to be paid to farmers for Maha losses

The Agriculture Ministry has made arrangements to pay compensation to paddy farmers who suffered losses during the last Maha season, from today (9), under the guidance of the Agrarian Services Department and the Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board. Also, Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Janaka Wakkumbura told the Daily News yesterday that US$ 213 million has been obtained from the World Bank to purchase chemical fertilizers that are urgently needed by paddy farmers.

The Government has instructed fertilizer companies to import 65,000 metric tons of urea from India immediately, the Minister added.
