No subsidised fuel for MPs from Police Garage - Minister

Refutes posts in media as malicious and provocative

No Parliamentarian is given fuel at a subsidised rate, Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekara told Parliament categorically denying posts shared that MPs get fuel at Rs.121.

He made this observation in Parliament in response to SJB Parliamentarian Buddhika Pathirana who said that if the post was correct and MPs were taking fuel at Rs.121 from the Police Garage filling station at Narahenpita it was a degradable act. He added that he had never taken that privilege and would never get it.

Responding to him, Minister Wijesekara said that the posts in circulation were incorrect and the MPs were never given fuel at a subsidiary rate, are not being given and would not happen in the future as well.

He said that on the request of the Speaker the IGP agreed to provide fuel from the filling stations that is used for their purposes. However they are provided fuel on cash at the retail price at the market.

“No Parliamentarian from either side or anyone has been given subsidized rates than the current market prices given to the public,” the Energy Minister said.

SLPP MP Weerasumana Dissanayake said that these MPs are spreading baseless information that would mislead the people and provoke them. “They are making these statements to become popular,” MP Dissanayake said. “But they spread hatred by such baseless statements. He added that all these MPs spread hatred among the people against the parliamentarians within the first two hours of the parliamentary sittings. He added that due to this reason an innocent MP had to sacrifice his life. At least these MPs should act responsibly from now onwards.” He said that he had never taken fuel from the Police Garage filling station. He added that his driver too stayed in que nearly four hours with the people to get the fuel.

However Minister Wijesekara said the fuel is provided to police vehicles at the Police Garage filling station on a ration.
