Work in unity to bring stability to country - Ramanya Chief Prelate

Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms Minister President's Counsel Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe briefed the Chief Incumbent of the Sri Lanka Ramanya Chapter Aggamaha Panditha Most Ven. Makulewe Wimala Thera on Tuesday at the Minioluwa Vidyavasa Pirivena in Mirigama yesterday.

The Minister briefed the Most Ven. Mahanayake Thera on the current political situation in the country, the proposed 21st Amendment to the Constitution and the way forward.

The Minister said that steps were taken to strengthen the Independent Commissions in 2015 through the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. However, the powers of those Commissions were reduced through the 20th Amendment to the Constitution.

The Justice Minister further stated that in order to build economic stability in the country, it is necessary to be politically strong. The International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the European Union and other international organisations are concerned about political stability in the country. Democracy can be strengthened by establishing political stability after the passage of the 21st Constitution.

The Minister said that after the adoption of the 21st Amendment to the Constitution, a new Constitution that can be agreed upon by all can be drafted.

The Minister added that this Bill is expected to be presented at the Cabinet meeting to be held next Monday. Religious leaders, political party leaders and civil society representatives will also be briefed on the Bill in the coming days.

The Most Venerable Makulewe Wimala Mahanayake Thera stated that the views of youths should be taken into consideration when introducing a new Constitution. The Mahanayake Thera further added that there must be a conducive atmosphere to indulge in politics. It is important that all must unite, regardless of party affiliations in order to stabilize the country politically and economically.
