Mother and daughter die in accident

A mother (41) and a daughter (14) from Rathmalgaha ela, Dambulla died yesterday when the three-wheeler they were traveling in slid off the road and fell into a culvert at Wannam Maduwa in Karawakkulama on Dambulla - Anuradhapura road.

Karawakkulama Police yesterday told the Daily News that the accident had occurred at 5.20 am. The family of four, consisting of the father (46), the son (11), and the deceased two were traveling to Anuradhapura to make a kiri aahara offering at Uda Maluwa of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi Temple.

According to Karawakkulama Chief Inspector A. K. Herath, the three-wheeler had been driven by the father. “It looks that he was unable to maintain control of the vehicle.”

“It swerved off the road and hit the culvert,” he said.

“Both he and his son were seriously hurt. They are treated in the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital,” said CI Herath.

The bodies of the deceased were handed over to the family relatives, the police said.
