India to provide Sri Lanka with 65,000 MT of Urea this month – Agriculture Minister

Sixty-five thousand metric tonnes of urea will be obtained from India to distribute throughout the island this month, Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said.

A meeting was held regarding this at the Agriculture Ministry, Battaramulla recently (2) where representatives of farmers from 25 districts were present.

Minister Amaraweera said that High Commissioner in India Milinda Morogoda had negotiated this issue with the UAE via India. Forty k.g of urea will be distributed per hectare under the programme at a cost of Rs. 10,000. The Minister also said that the compensation for the 2021 Maha Season too will also be paid. Petrol, Diesel and kerosene oil for the farmers will also be provided. The issue of chemical fertilizer was discussed but no solution was found.

All Island Famers’ Federation Batticaloa District President K.Yogaverl said that the Minister assured that nearly 10,000 metric tonnes of urea will be supplied to the Batticaloa District. All Island Famers’ Federation National President H. Samarakoon and others were present.
