Gang rivalry between drug smugglers leads to latest killing

Six shootings were reported from several parts of the country in the past 7 days.

The Police said a 25-year-old youth was killed in a shooting incident at Modara area yesterday evening the sixth shooting reported in the country during the last seven days.

According to Police, a shooting had taken place in the Moraketi Ara area along the Tangalle–Kataragama road at around 7 p.m. on Sunday when two unidentified gunmen came on a motor bike and opened fire at the victim, who was driving a cab and accompanied by two others.

Three individuals had been admitted to the Tangalle Hospital with injuries where the driver succumbed to his injuries, Police said.

Police suspect that the shooting had taken place as a result of the rivalry between two gangs of drug smugglers.

The a 37-year-old victim of Kudawella, Tangalle has been identified as a drug smuggler who had been released on bail after being remanded over drug smuggling charges.

Tangalle Headquarters Police are conducting investigations under the supervision of SSP of Tangalle to recover the reasons behind the shooting.

The first shooting which occurred last week was reported from Bastian Mawatha, Pettah on May 30, where two unidentified gunmen on a motorbike opened fire killing one person.

The second and the third incidents were reported on Friday, June 3 at Aluthgama and Panadura respectively where two individuals were killed. These two incidents were followed by the shooting that took place at Ahangama on Saturday where a 27-year-old individual was killed.

Separate Police teams have been deployed to investigate these incidents and find if they are connected to each other.
