CEB Engineers’ Union cries foul over Act amendment

The Ceylon Electricity Board Engineers’ Union (CEBEU) announced a countrywide strike from midnight (Wednesday 8) against amending the Electricity Act.

The CEBEU sources said that the strike is against the Bill gazetted on April 29, 2022 and to be presented in Parliament today. The Bill is presented to amend the Sri Lanka Electricity Act No. 20 of 2009.

The Union said the Power and Energy Ministry is trying to amend the Act without having proper and adequate discussions with the relevant sectors. It is going to be amended with the aim of abolishing entirely the competitive bidding process for procurement of electricity from private sector, which ensures the least cost as per the existing Act, the CEBEU representative said.

While the CEBEU vehemently rejects the proposed deceitful amendments to the Sri Lanka Electricity Act which will lead in depriving the right of the public in having electricity at the least cost has forwarded a few demands.
