PSC Report on changes to electoral system to be tabled in two weeks

The final report of the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) on Changing the Electoral System will be prepared in two weeks and it will be tabled in Parliament, Leader of the House and Public Administration Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said.

It was agreed that the final report of the Parliamentary Select Committee to identify the amendments to the Electoral and Election Structure would be prepared and presented to Parliament within the next two weeks, Committee Chairman Dinesh Gunawardena said.The Parliamentary Select Committee met yesterday. The final report will include new recommendations on the Local Government, Provincial Council and Parliamentary Election systems.

Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government Minister and Leader of the House Dinesh Gunawardena said that the final report will include recommendations on a number of issues such as election laws, women’s and youth representation, campaign spending by candidates through the media and counting of votes. The final report will be prepared accepting the principle of a mixed voting system consisting of divisional (single) and proportional representation in all elections.
