Batticaloa to be made most child-friendly town in S Asia

A capacity-building programme to make Batticaloa a child-friendly town was held at the Green Garden Hotel, Kallady, in the Batticaloa district, on Wednesday (8).

Local government officials involved in the physical and psychosocial protection of children participated in this initiative which was organized by the Children’s Emergency Relief International (CERI) and funded by United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF).

For the last three years, work has been going on to make Batticaloa town the most child-friendly town in the whole of South Asia, Batticaloa Mayor Thiagaraja Saravanapavan said.

This programme will also be implemented in the Eravur Urban Council and Kokkaddichcholai and Vellaveli Pradeshiya Sabhas. In the future, Ampara and Trincomalee districts are to be included in this initiative, Eastern Province Commissioner of Local Government N. Manivannan said.
