Container load of apples worth Rs 20 mn handed over to Dehiwala Zoo

Ports, Shipping, and Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva took steps to hand over a container load of apples worth Rs 20 million to the Dehiwala Zoo.

The National Zoological Gardens Department officials collected the apples from Colombo International Container Terminals (CICT) yesterday. Zoological Gardens Director-General Dr. Thilak Premakantha told the Daily News.

According to CICT Chief Executive Officer Jack Huang, the container had about 100,000 apples weighing nearly 24, 000 kilograms.

Since February, the apples have been lying at the Colombo International Cargo Terminals. They came all the way from China to the CICT. The importers have not cleared them from the port, according to Ports Authority officials. Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva had urged his officials to use the products for something constructive because they had not been cleared from the harbour.
