The main suspect in the death of a 74-year-old woman who was burnt to death in a house in the Gal Udupita area in Mahabage, Wattala, has been identified by the Mahabage Police as the husband of her only daughter.

Police had received a complaint that burglars had broken into the house between 1.00 am and 5.00 am on June 7, opened the cupboards and boxes, stole the property, killed the woman and had then fled.

The police arrested the woman’s son-in-law on suspicion of his behaviour and he revealed the details of the incident during further interrogation.

The suspect had confessed that he had killed his mother-in-law for her wealth, while his wife was receiving treatment at a private hospital in Wattala.

Mahabage Police have found gold jewellery and cash belonging to the deceased hidden in a car parked at the house.

The suspect has been remanded after being produced before the Wattala Magistrate’s Court.
