Short-sighted economic policies, wrong development plans and decisions reason for current economic crisis – Tissa Attanayake

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) National Organizer Tissa Attanayaka expressed concern over the day-to-day deteriorating financial instability in the country due to the short-sighted economic policies initiated by the government in the past and said due to this majority people in the country are facing immense hardships today. He said as a result of the government’s wrong development plans and decisions people have to suffer a lot today. Addressing the media Attanayaka said it has become a common sight today that people are wasting their valuable time in unending long queues to buy essential items such as rice, milk powder, gas, diesel, kerosene oil and petrol. “I do not know why the government leaders have no pulse to see the sufferings of people, who are in long queues to buy commodity items and we urge the President, Prime Minister or any other responsible parliamentarian even now to initiate a lasting solution to end the day to day never ending queues,” he said. He said although some people say that there has been no proper economic stability in our country during the past 74 years, no one could make such a statement, when considering the large scale development projects such as the Mahaweli Project that was initiated by former President J.R. Jayewardene to create thousands of jobs to our farmer communities.

He said in addition, the former President also created millions of jobs to our youth by establishing free trade zones in the country and former President R. Premadasa introduced garment factories that are even existing today in the country and generating millions of new jobs to our youth in all parts of the country.

He said even former Premier D.S .Senanayake too initiated many development programmes for the benefit of farmers in the country. Attanayake said when considering these large scale development projects, unfortunately the present President has so far not initiated any new employment oriented project in the country. He further said that a large number of unimportant projects initiated by the present government in the past has been the main cause to the current economic crisis in the country.
