Sri Lanka will have to wait till year end to get IMF loan - Dr. Harsha

Samagi Jana Balawegayaya (SJB) Parliamentarian Dr. Harsha de Silva said yesterday that Sri Lanka will have to wait until the end of this year to get a loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

He said the debt restructuring process will take time and it was also very complicated process.

He also said that a International Monetary Fund (IMF) team was due to come and sign an agreement soon, but that does not mean receiving any loans.

He said the IMF’s Board would have give the green light in order to confirm the loan.

“A team of the IMF will arrive in the country in the next few days. Negotiations should end and a staff level agreement should be signed. However, the IMF board has to approve it,” he said. He said to this end, the Government will have to take a number of measures such as increasing Government revenue, dealing with subsidies and implementing an acceptable programme to restructure debt.
