Nearly 60 percent of canteens island-wide closed due to LP Gas shortage

Nearly 60 percent of the canteens island-wide have been closed due to the LP Gas shortage, said All Ceylon Canteen Owners’ Association President Asela Sampath.

He said the canteen owners are unable to run their businesses due to the gas shortage and therefore steps should be taken to provide LP Gas for them.

He said due to the soaring prices of goods, food prices have been increased in the canteens. Accordingly, a plain tea is sold at Rs.50, a roll at Rs.100 and the price of fried rice and Kottu have also gone up to beyond Rs.500. “The canteens at Government institutions, schools and universities, where food items are sold at concessionary prices are also facing numerous difficulties in providing food at concessionary prices due to the increased prices of essential goods at present,” he further said.
