Park and Ride concept, new train introduced

The new transport system, including the ‘Park and Ride’ facility, is operative from yesterday to help commuters travelling to Colombo and suburbs.

Transport, Highway and Media Minister Dr.Bandula Gunawardena commenced the ‘Park and Ride’ facility at the Makumbura Multimodal Transport Centre yesterday. Commuters can park their private vehicle at the Centre and take the ‘city bus’ to their destinations. Parallel to that, the ‘city bus’ service is operative from the Kadawatha Highway Entrance to Colombo and from Katubedda to Colombo via Galle Road.

A new train between Colombo Fort and Waga was added to the train schedule from yesterday for office commuters and students. The train left Waga at 6.20am and arrived in Fort at 8.12am. In addition, a new train from Fort to Kandy was added to the train schedule at 5.20am. A night train will be operative every Friday at 10pm from Mount Lavinia to Jaffna and Kankasanthurai.

The train authorities informed that facilities are being arranged for people to park their private vehicles at a vehicle park near the station and then take the train. They said that more compartments would be added to other trains in several stages. These measures were taken based on proposals and opinions expressed at a meeting of experts and heads of institutions of the transport sector chaired by Minister Dr. Gunawardena.
