PMB to issue 10,000 MTs of rice per month to control shortage

Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera yesterday instructed Paddy Marketing Board officials to issue 10,000 metric tons of rice per month to control the shortage of rice in the market and the increase in prices of paddy using the stocks held by the Paddy Marketing Board.

A special discussion was held at the Paddy Marketing Board Head Office in Colombo regarding the issuance of rice by the Paddy Marketing Board yesterday and the purchase of paddy harvest for the Yala season this year.

Paddy Marketing Board Chairman Neil de Alwis and Deputy Chairman Duminda Priyadarshana were present at the discussion.

Minister Amaraweera also instructed officials to use the stocks of Samba Paddy currently available with the Paddy Marketing Board to release 5 kg and 10 kg bags of ‘PMB Rice’ to the market immediately.

It was also decided to start a programme to generate solar energy using the roofs of Paddy Marketing Board storage islandwide which currently has a capacity of around 200,000 square feet.
