Drug lords operating from overseas behind spate of killings

Police have succeeded in identifying the ring behind the killing of witnesses of cases related to drug smuggling and peddling which are being heard in Courts.

A senior police officer told the Daily News that the killings have been carried out by four leading drug traffickers based in Dubai.

The official said that all the shootings in the South targeting witnesses were  carried out under the direction of a criminal named Midigama Harak Kata. This underworld gangster currently living in Dubai is reportedly smuggling heroin and ICE from Pakistan via sea routes.

Two witnesses in a case being heard in court in connection with a drug smuggling were shot dead in Ahangama on June 4 and in Tangalle on June 5, police said.It has been revealed that the persons involved in the Tangalle shooting are also connected to Colombo. The witness who was shot dead on the night of June 5, was a 37 year old man.

He arrived in a motorcycle and was shot at with a T-56 assault rifle. He died on the spot. Two people who were with him were injured. Police investigations have revealed that the shooter had left the motorcycle by road and was traveling in a car after the murder. Investigations carried out on the number plate of the motorcycle revealed that the number plate affixed to the motorcycle was that of a resident of Dematagoda. The owner of the motorcycle with the number told the police that the number plate of the motorcycle which was parked in front of his house at night had been removed by someone about a month ago. He had also lodged a complaint with the police.

An inspection by the Commissioner of Motor Traffic on the chassis and engine numbers of the motorcycle revealed that a motorcycle with those numbers had not yet been registered. Accordingly, it has become clear to the police that the motorcycle used in the shooting was unregistered.
