Inebriated mahouts torturing elephants - Prelate

Mahouts addicted to drugs are torturing elephants and a formal programme needs to be formulated to control this situation, Malwatte Chapter Anunayake Most. Ven. Dimulkumbure Wimaladhamma Thera said.

The Thera said that elephants and tuskers run amok during the Perahera Season as they could not bear the severe torture inflicted on the elephants by the mahouts.

The Anunayake Thera was speaking at a meeting held at the Sri Dalada Maligawa premises to discuss the organization of this year’s Esala festival.

Ven. Wimaladhamma Thera said some mahouts torture the elephants in the worst possible ways. They show their knife and the goad to scare the animals. Even animals need love and kindness”, the Thera said.
