Seven more Sri Lankan refugees reach Tamil Nadu’s Dhanushkodi

MADURAI: Seven more Sri Lankans, including four children, fleeing the economic crisis in the island nation, have arrived at Dhanushkodi in Tamil Nadu.

They reached Dhanushkodi the early hours of Friday using an illegal ferry. The marine police at Mandapam were alerted by local people. Police officials reached the spot and carried out an inquiry. The seven people would be lodged in a refugee camp at Mandapam.

They are from two different families. While Dossnavis, 40, his wife Rajini, 39, and their three children hail from Vavuniya district, Mathiya, 40, and her seven-year-old son are from Trincomalee district. As the economic situation has worsened, many Sri Lankan families from North and East Provinces are fleeing to India. With them, the number of Sri Lankan refugees arriving at Rameswaram has touched 90. - The Times of India
