National Environment Policy to be updated

The Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposal made by Environment Minister Ahamed Naseer to implement the updated National Environment Policy.

Co-cabinet Spokesman Mahinda Amaraweera said that the Environment Ministry has taken measures to update the National Environmental Policy and Strategies published in 2003 with the advice of environmental experts and stakeholders as well as the views of the public.

Minister Amaraweera was speaking at the weekly Cabinet media briefing held yesterday at the Government Information Department.

The main policy statement that guides decision making on environmental issues in Sri Lanka is the National Environmental Policy and Strategies published by the Environment and Natural Resources Ministry in 2003. There have been a number of significant changes affecting the environment nationally and globally in the recent past.

At the same time, the economic, social, and cultural factors that contribute to environmental change, as well as the scientific knowledge of the environment, have changed significantly.
