Two held in fraud case

Gampaha Magistrate R.S.M. Mahendrarajah remanded a woman and her daughter-in-law for defrauding money from four persons promising them employment opportunities at the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC).

The Court remanded Nalini Podi Menike and her daughter-in-law Kavindya Gunaratne of Henegama, Weliweriya, for obtaining Rs. 950,000 from four persons, until July 5.

The Weliweriya Police submitted before the Court that the two women had defrauded Rs. 550,000 from a person in Battaramulla, Rs. 100,000 from another person in Modara, Rs. 300,000 from two persons in the Amithirigala area with the promise of employment in the CPC which did not happen.

Police said that the transactions had not been made within the Weliweriya Police division, so they were directed to the respective police divisions.

Weliweriya Police said that the two suspects have been assisted by a Local Government politician in the Dompe area and investigations are ongoing to arrest him too.
