The defending champions Royal College will look for a winning start when they take on St. Anthony’s College in their Inter-Schools Under-20 ‘A’ Division League Rugby Tournament opening fixture at the Royal Sports Complex in Reid Avenue today.

In fact, this year Royal are chasing a unique record in schools’ rugby as they are hoping to become the first team to win the coveted ‘A’ Division league title for four successive years.

When the tournament was last held in 2019, Royal equalled Isipathana’s record when they annexed the ‘A’ Division league title for the third successive year and now they are even more determined to perform well in the current season. Even then, the two schools managed to play their fixture in 2020 before the tournament was later called off due to the pandemic with Royal coming out victorious by a convincing margin of 41-14 on their home grounds.

Isipathana vs Science College

Meanwhile, former champions Isipathana College will launch their campaign with a game against Science College at Havelock Park today.

Isipathana are hoping to regain the ‘A’ Division league title after a lapse of six years following their heroics during the 2016 season where they completed a grand double by winning the league with an unbeaten record and the Knock-Out Championship as well.

Science College of course, successfully made it to the Cup Championship segment in 2019 but they finished last in the final points table with only three wins to their credit.
