Kavisha’s unbeaten 47 in vain as India win first T20

The promising right-hand batter Kavisha Dilhari scored an unbeaten 46 in 49 balls, laced with 6 fours but her efforts went in vain as India women’s team recorded a 34-run win over Sri Lanka women’s team in their first T20 match of the three-match series played at Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium yesterday.

Sri Lanka have never beaten India in a T20I at home. They last won a T20 against them in 2014, once again Indian lasses dominated the game with a comfortable win to take an early 1-0 series lead.

Indians scored 138 for 6 in 20 overs while Jemimah Rodrigues at no. 5 batter top scored a crucial unbeaten 36 which came off 27 balls with 3 fours and a six while skipper Harmanpreet Kaur scored 22 in 20 balls with 3 fours helped India reach 138 for 6 in 20 overs.

The experienced leg spinner Inoka Ranaweera was the pick of the bowlers finishing with 3 for 30 while also Oshadi Ranasinghe the off-spinner bowled well capturing 2 for 22.

Sri Lanka women chasing a target of 138 were under pressure from the beginning as young Vishmi Gunarathne was out for 1 in the second over and skipper Chamari Athapaththu scored a total of 16 off 19 when she was dismissed in the 7th over by leg spinner Radha Yadav who finished with 2 for 22.

The 21-year-old Kavisha Dilhari, waged a lone battle, top scoring with 47, but it was not enough to reach their target. Jemimah Rodrigues was named the Player of the Match.

The two teams will meet in their second T20 game tomorrow (25) at the same venue.
