Defending champions Royal College powered their way to a hard-fought 22-12 victory over St. Anthony’s College in their Inter-Schools Under-20 ‘A’ Division League Rugby Tournament match played at the Royal Sports Complex in Reid Avenue yesterday.

Royal, chasing a record fourth successive league title, got off to a flying start and went on to collect their points from one goal and three tries after having led 10-5 at half time.

The Antonians, of course after conceding an early try to their opponents, kept their hopes alive until the later stages of the game before ending up with one goal and a try.

Even then, Royal never looked all that confident on the field and made a series of errors despite scoring four tries, which gave them an additional bonus point in the end.

They showed early promise by scoring twice inside the first five minutes of play but thereafter, Royal struggled a bit to get their act together with the Antonians making a strong comeback after 30 minutes of play.

However, in the second half, Royal scored two more tries through their trademark rolling maul to seal the contest in their favour before the Antonians planted their second try of the match shortly before the final whistle.

Isipathana down Science 18-9

Former champions Isipathana College cruised to an exciting 18-9 victory over Science College in another Inter-Schools ‘A’ Division rugby match played at Havelock Park yesterday.

Isipathana ran down three tries and added a penalty to their tally after leading 13-6 at half time while Science College responded with three penalties.
