Taniya Gunasekera the athletic and netball star of HFC, Kurunegala

Netball, Badminton and Basketball player and Athlete, Member of the under 15 All Island Milo Champion Team Best player of the same tournament, and Member of the All Island under 20 Milo Super Tournament 2022 Taniya Kumari Gunasekera has brought honour and immense glory to her alma mater Holy Family Convent Kurunegala with her deeds in the field of sports especially in Netball.

Taniya who hails from Pothupitiya Wadduwa was born on 17th November 2004 and admitted to Holy Family Convent Kurunegala in 2010 . From Grade one to five Taniya did not take any interest in sports activities but when she came to grade six in 2015 she commenced participating in the school inter house sports meets. Her first attempt was at the under eleven age group in 100, 200 and 400 metres and she won places and in the following two years too she did the same events and got places. Then in 2018 she did 100 and 200 metres and Long Jump and she got she second place in these three events.

In the meantime Taniya showed an interest in Netball and her Parents Madava Gunasekera and Dilani Jayasundara made arrangements to hand over their daughter to school Netball Coaches Mrs.Amalka and Ananda Wannithillake and she commenced Netball under them and got selected to the under 13 Netball team and in 2015 her school team came up to the Best Eight and in the following year too they came up to the Best Super Eight in the Milo Tournament and it was a great boon to her.

Then in 2018 they participated in the qualifying tournaments by sweeping the board in Divisional, Zonal, District and Provincial and in the Milo All Island under 15 they were the Champions and she won the All Island Best Players Award and in the National Schools Tournament they were the Runner up.

In 2019 too they underwent the same process winning the tournaments and in the All Island Schools and Milo under 17 Tournaments they were the Second Runner up and in the Dialog Netball Tournament they came third. There was no Netball for two successive years in 2020 and 2021 due to Coronavirus and in 2022 All Island under 20 Super Milo Netball they were the Champions by beating formidable Musaeus College. With all these performances under her belt she took part in the recently conducted Educational Zonal tournament and they were the Champions.
