Former President Gotabaya seeks visit to Thailand

Thailand Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-cha and Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai have confirmed that the former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will temporarily stay in Thailand on humanitarian reasons.

“PM Prayut Chan-O-cha and Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai confirmed the ousted ‘Sri Lanka president will temporarily stay in Thailand’ on humanitarian reasons”, the Bangkok Post tweeted.

Sri Lanka’s ousted president Gotabaya Rajapaksa is expected to arrive in Thailand on Thursday, seeking temporary shelter in a second Southeast Asian country after fleeing his country last month amid mass protests, two sources said

Rajapaksa fled to Singapore on July 14, via the Maldives, following unprecedented unrest triggered by Sri Lanka’s worst economic crisis in seven decades and days after thousands of protesters stormed the President’s official residence and the office, the Bangkok Post reported
