Magistrate rejects Udayanga’s request

Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage yesterday (12) rejected a request made by the former Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Russia Udayanga Weeratunga.

Filing a motion, the Attorney-at-Law appearing on behalf of the suspect asked for a temporary relaxation of the relevant travel ban imposed on him as his client wants to go abroad to participate in a trade conference.

When Udayanga Weeratunga was granted bail in connection with the MIG aircraft deal case, the court had imposed a travel ban on him.

This is in connection over the financial fraud that is alleged to have taken place in procuring seven MiG-27 ground attack craft for the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF).

The Financial Crimes Investigation Department has pointed out that if he is allowed to go abroad this time, it is uncertain that he will return to Sri Lanka.Accordingly, the FCID has strongly objected to the suspect’s request to travel abroad.
