Over 2.4 mn vehicles have not taken ‘Fuel pass’

Out of the vehicles currently registered at the Motor Traffic Department, more than 2.4 million vehicles have not obtained the national fuel pass.

As of May 2022, the total number of vehicles registered with the Motor Traffic Department is 8,341,861. As of August 15, the number of vehicles, including motorcycles, that have obtained the national fuel pass is 5,889,324. Accordingly, 2,452,537 registered vehicles have not yet obtained the National Fuel Pass. A Department official said yesterday (17) that more than 2.4 million vehicles not getting the fuel pass means that those vehicles are not pumping fuel. The national fuel pass has been actively implemented since August 1, 2022. Commissioner General of Motor Traffic Department Nishantha Anuruddha Weerasinghe said that there is no mechanism to find out why they have not obtained the Fuel Pass.

He also said that his Department had no relevance in obtaining the Fuel Pass. Power and Energy Ministry Secretary Mapa Pathirana said that the exact number of vehicles that have obtained the National Fuel Pass cannot be announced until all vehicles of government and private institutions obtain the Fuel pass. The Government started issuing fuel pass to vehicles of government and private institutions from August 15.
