Anti-rabies vaccine drive in Homagama

Deaths of deer, cattles roaming around

The Wildlife Conservation Department has informed the Health Ministry’s anti-rabies campaign to immediately administer the rabies vaccine to dogs in Homagama and nearby villages due to the rabies disease in deer and cattle in the area.

Dr.Suhanda Jayawardena of the Wildlife Conservation Department said that the rabies vaccination for dogs in Homagama and surrounding villages has been started.

He said five deer and three cows had died yesterday (17) and it is suspected that they may have contracted rabies from dogs or foxes.

He said that this situation will be suppressed as soon as possible and requested the public not to harass all the free-roaming deer and cattle and try to drive them out of the area.

Dr.Jayawardena said that the public should be careful not to touch them or their saliva secretions to touch their bodies, especially if they find sick animals.
