Workshop on pluralism

 A one-day workshop and training on pluralism for female members in the 14 Local Government bodies in the Batticaloa district and women community leaders was held at Green Garden Hotel, Batticaloa, on Saturday (20).

This was organized by the Sri Lanka Peace Council in conjunction with the Batticaloa District Inter-Religious Committee (BDIRC), presided over by Coordinating Director E. Manogaran.

The workshop was titled ‘Plural Action for Conflict Transformation’ (PACT).

‘Introducing Pluralism as a Concept’ was explained by resource person Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Political Science, University of Peradeniya Dr. Ramesh Ramasamy who said that in the modern context action disregarding religion, race, language, ethnic and political differences will lead to the emergence of a pluralistic society. The recent move to have 25 percent female representation in Local Government bodies was a step towards pluralism.

The participants were divided into groups and each group had to discuss factors affecting pluralism in local government bodies in Batticaloa, such as the role of women in promoting pluralism. The views were explained by each group to the other groups.
