Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ajith Rajapaksa said that to resolve the economic crisis, we should deviate from the traditional political opinions and examine the reality on the ground and the global environment with a good understanding.

The Deputy Speaker pointed out that if we look at the history of the world or look at the history of the country, we can see cases where an agreement was reached for a short time or under minimal conditions to get rid of global economic crises and it is unfortunate that some political parties are trying to avoid it even though the best time for such a situation has now arrived.

Ajith Rajapakse said that the short term and long term solutions needed to overcome this economic crisis have been identified and an acceptable programme has been presented by the Government.

Ajith Rajapaksa said that it is timely to identify 61,000 food insecure families and provide 10,000 rupees per month to each family in the next four months and the programme should be implemented in such a way that the benefits are distributed among all members of those families.

He also said that due to the rise in the price of kerosene, some subsidies should be provided to small fishing boat owners and the people living in plantation areas without electricity facilities. Eyeglasses, educational equipment including chairs, cupboards, whiteboards for Dhamma schools, gas stoves and kitchen appliances were distributed to funeral societies and the total value of these aid materials is over Rs. 1.5 million.
