Probe against former CID Director

Colombo Additional Magistrate Ilangasinghe yesterday issued notice informing the Bribery Commission to appear before the Court on October 3 to conduct an investigation against the former Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and current DIG Rohan Premaratne regarding the alleged release of monies to the tune of Rs.7.5 million confiscated in a Court case related to heroin trade and remitting money through the banned undiyal system to the suspects in this case who are said to be foreign nationals while citing false reasons.

The financial investigation unit of the CID made the request while presenting the facts to the Court with regards to a complaint made by former Secretary to the Ministry of Defense retired Major General Jagath Alwis to the Inspector General of Police. The investigation has been started with connection to the incident which is said to have happened when Premarathne was the Director of the CID.

In this investigation on 21.02.2021, a group of officials arrested three Nigerians, an Uzbekistani woman and three Sri Lankans in connection with the frauds committed through Facebook and conducted an investigation.

There, an amount of Rs.7,543,110 was seized from the ceiling, under the beds and cupboards of the house where they lived. Also other charges were levelled against the suspects such as possession of heroin, entering the country without a visa, defrauding people through Facebook accounts etc.
