Remembering former editor of Sinhala Dictionary

September 5 marked the 58th death anniversary of the founding editor of Lankadeepa newspaper, Julius de Lanerolle, a former Chief Editor of the Sinhala Dictionary and a former lecturer at the University of Ceylon. Born on January 14, 1896, Lanerolle was educated at the Kelaniya Vidyalankara Vidyalaya and Bomiriya Junior College. Later, as a teacher at Bomiriya Vidyalaya, he worked in the same school with Kumaranatunga Munidasa. At that time, the principal of that school was Ahungalle A.D.D.S. Wijesekera.

Lanerolle, who left teaching and joined the Sinhala Dictionary office in 1926, was later the Editor of Anagarika Dharmapala’s Sinhala Baudhaya newspaper. He served as editor of many newspapers and assumed the position of the first Editor-in-Chief when the Times started the Lankadeepa newspaper.

Later he held the title of Secretary of the Official Language Commission, and was a senior writer in the country. A teacher of journalism, a literary man, Lanerolle served his country for 68 years and passed away on September 5, 1964.
