Bad weather warning

The Meteorology Department yesterday issued a warning for strong winds, rough seas and heavy showers in several areas of the country.

Showers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western Provinces and in the Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara Districts.

Heavy showers above 100mm may occur at some places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces and in the Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara Districts.

Several spells of showers may occur in the Northern and North-Central Provinces. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere in the evening or night.

Strong winds about 50 kmph can be expected at times over the Western Slopes of the Central hills.

The public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

On the apparent, the southward relative motion of the Sun is going to be directly over the latitudes of Sri Lanka during from August 28 to September 7. The nearest towns in Sri Lanka in which the Sun is overhead today (06) are Bentota (Kalutara District), Pothupitiya (Ratnapura District), Bodagama (Monaragala District).

The sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota will be very rough at times. The sea areas off the coast extending from Trincomalee to Puttalam via Kankasanturai and Mannar will be rough at times. The other sea areas around the island may be moderate.

There is a possibility of an increase in swell waves (about 2.5–3.0 m) in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.

Therefore, it is advised not to venture into the sea for fishing and naval activities in the areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota during the next 24 hours.
