India down Bhutan in SAFF U-17 opener

India launched their defence for the SAFF Under-17 Football Tournament with a convincing 3-0 win over Bhutan in the curtain raiser match played at the Racecourse Grounds in Colombo yesterday.

India lived up to expectations as the favourites as they built up a commanding 2-0 lead at half time following two good strikes from Karous Singh and Danny Meiti in the space of 15 minutes.

India then virtually sealed the contest in their favour with their Captain Vanlalpeka Guite scoring the third goal shortly after the turnaround.

However, thereafter, Bhutan did well to keep the Indian team quiet with some solid defensive work and missed a couple of scoring opportunities as well during the latter stages.

The six-nation tournament will resume on September 7 after today’s rest day with the Maldives playing against Bangladesh and Nepal facing Bhutan at the same venue.
