Soldier, three others held for collecting money in Dehiwala

Police have arrested four individuals including a Lance Corporal while collecting money from the public in the guise of an Army’s fund raising programme at Malwatta road in Dehiwala yesterday.

They have been collecting funds from the public stating that collected money will be used to provide school equipment to the children of fallen war heroes.

They have carried out this racket for several days while the army person was in his uniform. It was reported that the army person has been in the active service till August 31.The other three suspects arrested have been identified as suspects who were in the remand custody on drug related charges, police said.

During the investigations the suspects have revealed that they had collected nearly Rs.20,000 from the public and businessmen of the Dehiwala area. Police have recovered Rs.1,050 in the possession of the suspects during the arrest.

The 34-year-old Lance Corporal is a resident of Karandeniya and the other three suspects are residents of Dehiwala area, police said.Police were to produce the suspects before the courts yesterday. Dehiwala Police are investigating.
