Country should unite to achieve greater prosperity - UNP Chairman

Sri Lanka can achieve prosperity and greater heights in all spheres if everyone unites by working together regardless of race, caste and religion, said UNP Chairman Vajira Abhayawardena. Addressing the United National Party’s 76th Anniversary on Tuesday, he appealed for everyone's support in building the country.

UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene said that the UNP will never bow down to opportunism.

He said that when Mahamanya D.S. Senanayake founded the UNP, it was a party that was formed where people of all religions and races could work together.

“He formed a party with the consent of all people to come under one umbrella,” Wijewardene added.

Wijewardene invited all the parties to come forward to unite the country as one nation.

He added that President Ranil Wickremesinghe took over a country which was facing a number of problems such as the fuel, gas and medicine shortages.

UNP General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara said that the Government has two struggles to win. He emphasized that strengthening the economy is the first struggle while building a better tomorrow for the youth is the second struggle.

He said that he is confident that the UNP will conquer these two struggles successfully.

He requested all parties to unite in developing the country by giving strength to the Government in the same way they gave strength to D.S. Senanayake to develop the country.

UNP Deputy Leader Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said that whenever our country collapsed economically and politically, it was the United National Party (UNP) that worked and succeeded in taking the country forward.

He said that in 2015, the United National Party took over a country that was in economic decline. Similarly, UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe took the responsibility in leading the country, which was in the economic doldrums.

Kariyawasam said that the UNP has taken over the leadership of a country that had collapsed in all aspects. He added that President Ranil Wickremesinghe's philosophy, economic programme and the plan to sell loss-making Government institutions have been appreciated by everyone.

Tourism Minister Harin Fernando said that it is a pleasure to return to the United National Party Headquarters. He also emphasized that he will never leave the party again.

He said that he considered it a responsibility to stand behind a leader who can accept challenges. Therefore, he invited those in the Opposition to be a part of this victory journey. Fernando said he and Manusha Nanayakkara came back to the UNP to assist the fruitful journey of the UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe.

“Wickremesinghe’s aim is to create a debt-free country by 2048 and therefore we joined it,” he said.

We have become a nation that begs for treasure while sitting on a treasury. Political and policy mistakes have contributed to this.

He stressed that the third struggle is being implemented against those who prevent the development of the country.
