Education Ministry focuses on English language skills for school students

Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajayantha said that steps will be taken to make practical use of the English language from the First Grade next year.

He emphasized that English language skills are essential for the educational reforms to be carried out in moving forward with technology.

Minister Premajayantha said that through the reforms, it is hoped that steps will be taken to make practical use of the English language from the First Grade next year.

He added that it has been proposed to teach mathematics and science from Grade 6 and up in English as well for students whose mother tongue is Sinhala or Tamil.

Premajayantha added that many of the technical terms in these subjects are related to the English language, so children can naturally get used to it without much difficulty.

He said that there will be no injustice to the rural children. Another programme is currently being implemented to overcome the shortage of science, mathematics and English teachers, which has been one of the reasons for the backwardness of children in rural areas, and to provide English language skills.

The Minister expressed these views while participating in the ‘English is Simple’ English language promotion programme jointly implemented by the Education Ministry with the contribution of the National Savings Bank.

According to this English language promotion programme, skill-based activity manuals and CDs will be given to children in all secondary schools in the country based on the school curriculum. These books have been created by the English Language Unit of the Education Ministry with the participation of experts in the education system so that children can learn English through entertaining and practical activities. All the children of the country can get this English language knowledge by visiting the e-Thaksalawa website of the Ministry.

In this programme held yesterday at the Education Ministry auditorium under the leadership of the Education Minister, teachers and students of 21 selected schools in the Western Province were present and Education Secretary M.N. Ranasinghe was also present.
