Zoo’s Tigress ‘Kella’ dies

The mother of the three Bengal tiger cubs, ‘Kella’ who has been the most talked about at Dehiwala Zoo, has died.

A spokesperson for the Dehiwala Zoo said that the Kella who gave birth to the cubs named Akira, Duma and Leo on March 5 was suffering from a cancer.

She died while being treated by the zoo’s veterinarians and staff. She was a very loving tigress to her cubs and was about 15 years when she died. She was brought to the Dehiwala Zoo in Sri Lanka in 2008 through an animal exchange programme from the Xinjiang Safari Park in China. Her body will undergo a post-mortem and other tests.
