Over 25,000 to retire from Govt. service this year after 60 year bar

Public Administration Ministry Secretary M.M.P.K. Mayadunne yesterday said that the circular reducing the retirement age of government employees to 60 years is to be issued within the next two days.

The circular to provide five years of leave for government employees locally was issued yesterday.

He said that about 18,000 employees retire from the government service a year and it is expected that 25,000 government employees will retire from service with the reduction of the retirement to 60, The number of three armed forces who retire each year is between eight thousand and one thousand. Four thousands of the armed forces have retired in August, this year. Around 3,400 civil government employees have already submitted their applications for retirement. The submission of applications for retirement of government employees has decreased due to the extension of the retirement age to 65 as a government policy. Recruitment for the next five years will be done only for essential purposes. The Ministry Secretary further stated that it is hoped that the current economic level will reach a favourable level by the end of the next five years.
