Over 1,000 UDA lands to be developed - Minister

Unused lands and buildings belonging to the Urban Development Authority will be developed under public-private partnerships, Urban Development and Housing Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said yesterday.

The number of lands and buildings identified for the development is 1008.

Minister Ranatunga said this project will be implemented with the participation of local and foreign investors as one of the solutions to the prevailing dollar crisis in the country.

Several public-private partnership projects have already been identified to be implemented with an estimated cost of US$1950 million. Minister further said it has been expected to be generated between 12,000 and 15,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities through these projects.

Under this project, 2700 housing units for middle-income earners have been planned to be built in Colombo, Kurunegala, and Kandy cities, and small and medium-scale container yards and industrial zones have also been planned to be built on 908 acres of land in Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, and Hambantota districts. In addition, seven multi-storied public car parks are to be constructed in Colombo, Kandy, and Kurunegala. Minister Ranatunga also said that it is expected to build tourist hotels, museums and exhibition centres to attract local and foreign tourists by preserving buildings with historical value in the vicinity of other main cities.
