Formulate new National Nutrition Policy - Sajith

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa proposed the government to establish a new National Nutrition Policy to find solutions to the issue of malnutrition in the country.

Premadasa made the request joining the second day of the two days debate on the UNICEF report on malnutrition in children and mothers in Sri Lanka in Parliament yesterday (7). The adjournment debate was moved by Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Rohini Kaviratne on Tuesday (6).

Premadasa also proposed to establish a joint nutrition programme aiming at children from 6 months to 9 years, pregnant mothers, breastfeeding mothers, school students and similarly important groups.

Premadasa pointed out that it is unethical to appoint a large Cabinet while the rations given to pregnant mothers are cut down citing the economic crisis.

The Opposition Leader also said that the Opposition does not only criticize the government but also come up with plans and projects to assist the people who are suffering from various economic hardships. He noted that the SJB was able to provide medical aid and equipment worth Rs.150 mn to health services during the last few months.

Premadasa also said that the Opposition understands that a bankrupt government cannot do much to lift a bankrupt economy.
