Twenty one leopards died in snares from 2020

Twenty-one Sri Lankan leopards have died due to the snares so far this year since 2020, the Wildlife Ministry said. Of them, nine have died in 2020, eight in 2021 and four have died so far this year in upcountry areas.

According to Ministry records, Wildlife Officers have been able to rescue another 11 leopards which were found trapped in snares within the same period.

Wildlife Department Director General M.G.C. Sooriyabandara said that his department has taken action to prevent the death of these animals which are at risk of extinction.
