Suspect arrested with 600 illicit cigarettes

Special Task Force personnel attached to the Gonahena camp arrested a suspect with over 600 counterfeit cigarettes at a hotel in Naikanda last Friday.

The suspect, a resident of Minuwangoda was handed over to Katunayake Police, the STF sources said

The Customs officials last week arrested five passengers at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) who had allegedly brought 810 cartons of illegal cigarettes containing 162,000 fags.

This stock of counterfeit cigarettes worth Rs 16 million was taken into custody at the arrival terminal of the airport. The suspects who are in the age group of 24-45 years are residents of Chilaw, Colombo and Moratuwa

These suspects have arrived at the BIA from Muscut by an Oman Airways flight . Further investigation into this incident had been conducted by Customs officials including Superintendents Jude Fernando and Rasika Ariyasena and Ruwan Perera.

The customs officials following an investigation, had imposed a Rs. 25,000 fine on four passengers each. The stock of illegal cigarettes had been confiscated.
