Student hacker released on bail

The student who was arrested for hacking the Examinations Department’s official website, was enlarged on bail by Colombo Additional Magistrate Manjula Rathnayake yesterday.

He was released on a surety of Rs.1 million.

This student had accessed the 2021 G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination results by hacking the Examinations Department’s website and was arrested by the Cyber Crime Investigation Division of the Criminal Investigation Department on Thursday on a complaint lodged by the Commissioner General of the Examinations.

The Criminal Investigations Department informed the Magistrate that although number of documents have to be submitted to access the official website of the Examination Department and this student has accessed the website very easily.

The CID further stated that the student had hacked the website, retrieved data on the 2021 GCE Advanced Level Examination results and displayed it on a separate web portal.

Attorney Chinthaka Fernando appearing on behalf of the student stated that both the parents of the student were teachers and the two elder sisters are studying at the university. The Counsel further stated that the suspect is presently studying Technology at a leading school in Galle.

The Counsel also highlighted that the students with such knowledge should be protected and pleaded his client be released on bail.

The Criminal Investigations Department requested the Magistrate to issue an order directing the Government Analyst’s Department to destroy the aforesaid website as the student had only entered the Examination Department website.

Accordingly, the Magistrate ordered the Government Analyst’s Department to destroy the website. The Magistrate also ordered the student to report to the police in the area of residence between 9 and 12 am on the last Sunday of every month.
