Sri Lanka won four medals including a silver and I am very happy about this achievement especially the first time a young girl from the rural area of Pannala, Nethmi Ahinsa won the wrestling bronze medal which is the first wrestling Commonwealth Games medal in history said National Olympic Committee(NOC) President Suresh Subramaniam who is the man behind the success of NOC administration.

Actually we selected few athletes to focus on international medals and she was one of them and the sponsorship is a boost to this type of athlete.

We won the first athletic Commonwealth Games athletic medal in Auckland in 1950 while the gold medal was won by Duncan White in 440 yards hurdles events. In the year 2000 Sydney Olympics Susanthika Jayasinghe won the 200m silver medal now after 22 years time Yupun Abeykoon was able to win the bronze medal in the 100 metres event in the Birmingham Games . He ran with an impressive time of 10.14 seconds.

The worlds top athletes were not present at this meet and they hope to take part in 2024 Olympics in France and we have to plan for next Olympics. We have to set a target and plan to work on it. Proper planning is vital to achieve the target said NOC chief.

The Sports Ministry, Education Ministry, NOC and National Sports Federations have to get together and each of them have to realize their role to develop sports and this is very important to go forward.

Some media reports pointed out large contingents and officials took part at the Commonwealth Games. This time the players from 13 sports took part at the games, especially in cricket and rugby we had to send more team members while women’s cricket team comprised 15 players with five officials. As NOC President I had to stay with them during the entire period of the Games as my secretary Maxwell de Silva did not join the tour party due to his busy schedule and I had to take the responsibility for the team success. Normally I used to return home and go 2 or 3 times at my own expense but due to limited officials I also had to stay full period while our Chef De Mission Major General Dampath Fernando and his deputy NOC Treasurer Gamini Jayasinghe did a tremendous job for the whole team . Two officials and eight athletes went missing during the Games and it was an additional role to look after all and coordinate the security during this Games.

Yupun Abeykoon requested to get his coach , physio and Manager and we had to provide his requirements as he is our medal prospect with overseas training. NOC officials are doing honorary duty at NOC while Ministry officials are doing administrative duty and my team is always working for development of sports.

As a former Tennis National player, administrator locally and Internationally at the Asian Body as a Vice President sports administration is very familiar to me.

NOC is not a place to produce the medal winners and it the duty of the National Sports Federations with the support of the Sports Ministry. We also have High Performance athletes program, overseas training to focus on medals and conduct Olympic solidarity courses, Sports Management Courses and etc are main areas to focus from NOC and International Olympic Committee (IOC) support is needed to succeed in all these activities.

Some have criticized NOC as corrupt but as the head of the NOC I must say we all are doing honorary job while it's very clean and IOC always highly appreciated our duties to promote sports.

We also remember our immediate President Hemasiri Fernando who did a tremendous job for NOC and was honoued this time with life membership from the Commonwealth Sports Federation.

Palitha Bandara the para athlete won the discus throw silver medal. we helped this para athlete to go to Birmingham one week before the games to adjust to conditions and he worked hard to get a silver medal.

The NOC is willing to work together with the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) and give assistance to them which will give us more medals in the future and Sports, Education Ministries and NOC should gettogether for Sri Lanka Sports success.
