In conjunction with the 99th International Day of Cooperative Societies, the Katana Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society (MPCS) represented the Western Province and won the Gold trophy at the 2021 National Cooperative Society Evaluation Festival which was held among various cooperative societies across the island.

This Gold trophy is awarded to the MPCS which has provided excellent service, achieving a profit in the year. The award was presented to the Board of Directors led by the current Chairman K.K. Gavesha Saniratne by Western Province Cooperative Development Department Commissioner Ruvini Ayachana Wickrama.

This is the first time that the Katana Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society has won a Gold trophy for its performance.

The current Chairman and the Board of Directors, Executive Officers including General Manager Neela Hemalatha provide efficient and well-needed advice to the staff. This was the main reason for the successful achievement of the targets.

Current Chairman Gavesha Saniratna’s mission to run this institution in a cost-effective manner, providing quality service to the public, in the face of the current economic situation as well as the Covid pandemic is highly commendable. In March 2020, this institution was a loss-making institution and at present, it has been able to earn a profit of Rs. 25.8 million.

There are 214 staff working in the institution. Public service is maintained by this institution in the form of a self-service banking section, main warehouse section, packaging section, transport section, and fuel section.

The Katana Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society consists of 87,000 members. Concessional commercial services are maintained for its members based on the Katana electorate. Accordingly arrangements have been made to provide loans to the members and non-members at a subsidized interest rate. Meanwhile a loan programme under pawning of gold jewellery is being implemented with concessional interest rate for members as well as non-members of the cooperative society.
