The team of 19 players will take part at the World Table Tennis (WTT) Youth Contender championship which will be conducted from September 12 to 18 in Bangkok, Thailand. The competition will be in both Boys and Girls’ sections. WTT Youth Contenders are an important segment of the ITTF calendar said Secretary of Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka,(TTASL) Chandana Shrinath Wijetunga.

International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) focuses on the future of the sport by upgrading its competition and training programs for the youth continuously. Unveiling the stars of tomorrow, the new WTT Youth Series will hand the next generation of table tennis talents the ideal stage to develop and bring them closer to the future of table tennis. The new configuration will be broken down into two stages: WTT Youth Contenders and WTT Youth Star Contenders and aligns the WTT Youth Series with the WTT Series to create a whole sport-playing pathway. said the TTASL Secretary.

Meanwhile with the performance and World Ranking points earned at the WTT Youth Contender events determines who qualifies for the Youth Star Contender series. . Because the Youth contender is held in the Asian continent participants from Asian and South Asian countries is higher than in many other. Apart from last year’s turmoil Sri Lankan teams have been in Thailand for youth series and showed promising results. This year the Youth Contender will take place in Fashion Island a venue that developed and improved with many sporting-related infrastructures. The Players will participate in individual events (Singles) in their respective age categories U-11 to U-19. Players are selected according to the first eight ranks of each age category according to the current ranking list after the Junior Nationals.
