Dimbula Pathana Police said that a young man found dead at the Kotagala Mayfield intersection on the Hatton – Nuwara Eliya main road, died in a car accident.
Police said that CCTV footage showed that the man had fallen on the side of the road, presumably due to consuming too much alcohol, and a speeding van had run over him.
A man who had got down from the van went to the youth lying on the road with severe injuries, but had later fled without assisting him or informing the police.
The deceased was identified as Nadira Sampath (30), who was working in a fish store in Talawakelle. He was from Balangoda.
Police said that the deceased youth, after consuming alcohol, had gone to his rented accommodation in Hatton from Talawakele.
He had told friends he was going to watch the Asia Cup final between Pakistan and Sri Lanka yesterday night. He had met with the accident when he was returning to Hatton.
The police are yet to arrest the driver of the van and investigations are continuing.
