Probe into alleged gold theft from Indian passenger

The Negombo Divisional Crimes Investigation Unit has started an extensive investigation regarding an alleged incident in which more than 05 kg of gold was stolen  from an Indian airline passenger who arrived from Dubai and was ready to go to India via Sri Lanka.

Police said the gold had allegedly been stolen at the duty-free mall located in the premises of the Bandaranaike International Airport.

The Indian citizen, who has complained to the Police regarding this theft, has mentioned that he came to here from Dubai on September 10 with 06 kgs and 960 grams of gold to travel to India via Katunayake.

He had said he went into a clothes shop in the duty free shopping area and the gold had accidentally spilled on the floor in the fit-on room. He has said some workers in the shop had helped him to collect the gold. The workers at the shop later had informed the Customs officers about the incident and when they had checked his luggage they had only found 02 Kg and 332 grams of gold. However, the Indian national has complained to the Police he had more than 06 Kgs of gold and he was suspicious about the workers at the duty free shop.
